Cargo trousers - this seasons most wanted item

I am sure alot of us will remember the 90s era when cargo trousers were made famous by girl bands such as All Saints and the Spice girls and will not want to re-live those crunchy cotton wearing days. The cargo trouser is making a comeback and it will be this season most wanted item. But, like us, it has grown up. Yes you can find a true form of the 90s version out there, but I will be wearing my cargo trousers in a smart way.

Taking inspiration from the cult brand The Frankie shop who’s cargo trousers sold out many times last year, the high street have now followed. I brought a pair of stone trousers in the Me + Em sale in the Summer and have loved styling them Summer into Autumn. What excites me about cargo trousers styling is wearing them with boots, trainers, flat shoes, heels and eventually sandals when the weather warms up. They are versatile. Forget about the pockets and treat them as a stylish alternative to jeans that you can wear casually or smarter depending on your footwear and outerwear.

My advice would be to not think about how you used to wear them but to see them as new trouser to add into your wardrobe that’s going to up your style this year. I have already worn mine for evening, day and work appointments all with different shoes and outerwear, if you keep them smart then they won’t feel like you are trying to re-live your youth.

The knitted dress

The last couple of Winter’s the knitted dress has had a resurgence but it’s updated for 2022. These easy to throw on dresses can be worn for work, weekend, the school run or out for evening all depending on your footwear. I wear mine with trainers and boots, with bare legs right now and thick black tights in the colder weeks. I love that it keeps me warm when working from home, I can pop on a blazer for work appointments and then a leather biker for evenings out. It’s so versatile you will wonder what you did without one!

5 Spring updates to buy now

Wondering what to get this season to bring your wardrobe upto date, well don’t fear here is my Top 5 pieces to invest in and last through Summer.

STRIPE SHIRT

Stripes are everywhere this season, see my blog post ‘Bold Spring stripes’ for more inspiration. But the stripe shirt is the wardrobe hero for this whole year. Wear it tucked into jeans, loose with skirts, over swimwear or open with smart trousers, this versatile piece will ensure it becomes your uniform for the coming weeks (well it is mine!).

NECK SCARVES

The newest accessory that you add to any outfit, but mainly with shirts as above, jumpsuits and to add styling detail to plain t-shirts and blazers.

CREAM /WHITE SHOES

Something that instantly updates your outfit and makes it look more Spring like are lighter coloured shoes. The trend for cream of white footwear has been growing for a while and this is a great time to invest in something that will also work through Autumn.

DENIM

Denim is having a comeback, especially in shirts and dresses this season. Pair the shirts with smart trousers, skirts or hanging loose over vests.

SHIRT DRESSES

The shirt dress is uncomprimising and a wardrobe staple in anyones wardrobe, update it with stripes, prints or bright colours this season.

Dressing for 2022

There is a definite change in the air, it’s not just the smell of Spring, the coming out of our covid bubble, it’s far more than that. It’s positivity about life, work and travel and the feeling of moving on now. But what I am finding is that you need to learn how to dress for your new life. Whether that being going back into the office, getting a promotion, children growing up, divorce or moving house, life has changed but our wardrobes have not followed.

A great place to start is by looking at your wardrobe. Spending time assessing what you need and what you don’t need. Whilst this process has always been a cathartic one, it’s far more about clothes, it’s also about letting go of past and future selves.

It always begins with questions; does this fit? When did I last wear it? Does I feel good wearing it? This can led to a full assessment of the life that you have led, the choices made, the careers lost or the ambitions not reached. Saying goodbye to the clothes that have accompanied us through those choices and our lives is its own form of therapy.

Read this quote below from a client where we had recently re-visited her wardrobe after 3 years where she went through a divorce, a house move and a job change…

“Thanks so much for a fab day today, I actually feel lighter already and super excited about getting dressed tomorrow and the wardrobe looks so organised too which makes me so happy.”

Some things will no longer have a place in your life but these clothes can accompany other women through theirs, women who are in a different place in their lives to you. Saying goodbye to the clothes that no longer serve us is hard, because it’s an acknowledgement that a part of us has moved on. But it can also feel like momentum, like your like is evolving and growing and there is no greater feeling than that.

If you are reading this and feel like you are ready to let go of your past lives and clothes that don’t serve you well then please email me for a consultation.
