Sick of the throw-a-way fashion mentality? Wanting to buy items of clothing and know where they come from? This week’s blog post is all about how to look good with a clear conscience.

Has this week’s news story regarding Boohoo’s exploitation of it’s supply chain factory workers been the nail in the coffin for you when shopping on the high street.? With sustainability and ethical practices being such a prominent topic in the fashion industry you would think factories might have changed their bad habits by now, suppliers might of got stricter on what factories they use and brands might have put ethical policies at the forefront of their business.

It’s hard to know what brands to trust when it comes to their sustainability, ethical conscience and eco-friendly practices that they truly do follow rather than just put out there to appease the consumer.

I am constantly bothered by high street ranges like ‘H&M conscience ‘ range, what does this mean? When you drill down on their website, it cites using materials that are made from at least 50% sustainable sourced materials, with the exception of cotton which is only 20%. But the materials don’t make up the full package, are these garments made in the same factories other garments are made in, are they paid below the minimum wage, are they being shipped and packed with non recycled packaging and flown around the world creating more air pollution?

Eco friendly fabrics aren’t enough, high street brands need to be accountable for every single part of the supply chain and if you truly believe in shopping consciencesly then make a start with the best sustainable brands that I use for clients and myself.

Everlane

Everlane’s mission statement is to build a transparent and environmentally responsible supply chain that leads the way in reducing the impact on the planet making clothes has on it. They consider the materials they use and production partners they work with to reduce waste, chemicals, and plastics that endanger the planet’s ecosystems. They produce timeless basics at great prices that are designed to last, so making the right choice can be as simple as putting on a t-shirt.

Tretorn

From parkas made using recycled PET bottles and jackets created from discarded fishing nets to eco-friendly trainers constructed with locally sourced canvas, heritage Scandi brand Tretorn is serious about making sustainable, functional pieces with longevity. The company's eco essentials initiative aims to create environmentally-friendly contemporary rainwear designed to last which is at the heart of everything they do. For them, it is absolutely essential to act sustainably and take care of the nature, they use heritage and knowledge to contribute to a better future. From using old fishing nets, to recycled polyester, using left over fabrics to make garments to creating rainwear out of plants like sugarcrane and tapioca, Tretorn sustainable innovation surely is the future.

Veja

Meghan Markle's favourite trainer brand has been changing the sneaker game since 2005. They produce environmentally friendly sneakers made with raw materials sourced from organic farming and ecological agriculture, without chemicals or polluting processes. By using organic, agroecological and fair-trade cotton to make the sneakers canvas, rubber grown in the Amazon rainforest for the soles and recycled plastic bottles to create a mesh Veja is unique selling point is it’s sustainability. They also work with an organisation that helps people who have been incarcerated or are otherwise struggling to find work, to employ workers to prepare orders to bring their ethical practices full circle in the supply chain.

Batoko

I discovered this swimwear brand through Instagram a couple of years ago and brought unique colourful swimsuit from their range last summer that I truly fell in love with. Their swimwear is made from recycled plastic waste intercepted before headed for landfill and our oceans, it’s literally made from rubbish! Batoko is a micro-business and they aim to stay that way, consciously keeping the collection small, simple and at a much more sustainable pace that's kinder to the planet and the people that make them. They focus on the individuality and longevity of each design and ensure that they never over-produce so therefore producing no waste for the environment. By keeping it small their supply chain is small so they can keep control over the people that make the swimwear.

Nobody’s Child

Nobody’s Child’s mission is to provide sustainable solutions; they re-purpose leftover fabric from past seasons to divert it from a lifetime in landfill, they donate leftover’s to fashion colleges and they main purpose is to avoid landfill. What I like about this green brand is that they don’t buy or design season to season, they drop small collections and continue to run them in different fabrics that they can get hold of. They are not dictated by trends or seasons so therefore produce garments that you want to wear all year round. They source locally and reduce their carbon footprint by working with UK manufacturers and are smart with who they partner with globally. What’s also great about this brand is the accessible price point they sell the garments at, making shopping greener more affordable for everyone.

What's on my Spring want list...?

stil-243522-unsplash.jpg

Why write a list?

Every season I write a want list of pieces that I either need or want in my wardrobe. The definition of ‘need’ for me is when something is no longer wearable to the point that it has to be replaced because you’ve loved it and worn it so much. The definition of ‘want’ for me is something that I wish to have because it might fill a gap in my wardrobe, or perhaps its a trend item that I love or just something that is constantly on my mind when shopping for clients.

The reason I write a list is so that I don’t haphazardly buy things, this gives me a strategy to ensure that I don’t impulse buy, I don’t repeat buy something I already have and most importantly for me, that I don’t over buy. I tell alot of clients about my strategy to help them really think about what is in their wardrobe so that when you buy items they will fit in with the other pieces in your already own. Review your wardrobe, what have you loved wearing, what haven’t you worn alot of and what are you missing that will pull more outfits together?

“A great wardrobe is like a well-oiled machine that consists of interrelated parts that all work together, allowing you to mix and match freely and create a ton of different outfits that all suit your personal style.”

A common comment from clients to me is “I love fashion but I hate buying clothes”, if you have the tendency to feel over whelmed, stressed or anxious when shopping by having a list it will keep you focused and help you make the best choices for your style. The average shopper goes on a little shopping trip with a vague idea of what they want to buy and what they eventually take home is something that was on sale, something that caught their attention or something that they will never wear once home. By writing a list every season it will help you build a more cohesive wardrobe which will enhance your style and matches your wardrobe preferences.

What’s on my Spring 2020 list

I have been shopping alot for clients since January so my want list has come out of pieces I want to wear now to update some of my Winter pieces I have been wearing since October. A couple of pieces I have brought already, I do find it important to gradually buy the items on the list so you get to wear them and see how they feel in your wardrobe. Plus this list isn’t set in stone, I will constantly think about it and review it if something else catches my eye then it will knock an item off the list. I will always keep it to 5 items though and it’s a challenge to stick to them but I want to be mindful of consumerism and waste and I find by writing it down it gives me that focus.

1. WHITE JEANS - something I never thought I would buy but I have loved wearing these for the past couple of weeks with dark tops, coats and boots. The shape should be tapered, or barrel leg rather than skinny for an updated style.

2. TRAINERS - I am obsessed with trainers again right now and next week’s blog post will be dedicated to which pair I am going to buy as there is so much out there to love right now. My old Stan Smith’s are looking grubby and stained so I need a replacement for this Spring as I wear them alot to appointments and shopping trips.

3. CULOTTES OR TROUSERS - I am finding I wearing alot more different bottoms and love wearing the trousers I already own so I would like to invest in another pair that help with creating more outfits in my wardrobe for consultations, weekend wear and daily outfits.

4. WHITE SHIRT - this pretty white shirt trend I wrote about on last week’s blog post here - there are so much gorgeous options out there right now and a great way to update your wardrobe with a jumper over the top now and then to wear on it’s own when it warms up.

5. CHECK DRESS - I have tried on a number of different check dresses over the past couple of weeks and whilst I liked them, not enough to buy one of them. I don’t have a check dress in my wardrobe so feel this is something I would get a lot of wear out of in the Spring with tights and the Summer with sandals. I am just waiting for the right one to come along.

My Spring shopping list

shopping1.JPG

Every new season I write a wish list and I encourage clients to write a shopping list of the wants and need of your wardrobe. Firstly though you need to asses, edit and detox your wardrobe. This is a hugely important starting point as it gives you clarity , reminds you what you have, what you loved last year and what you need to replace. Once you have detoxed your wardrobe and have invested in the basics that can be worn day in and day out, you now need to think about the seasonal items that give your style personality.

Each season my advice is to invest in just five fashion‑forward statement pieces to update your look. The idea is that limiting your choice will make you think more about what you buy, so there will be fewer regrettable impulse purchases. Plus, you can invest more in high-quality pieces that you’ll love for years to come.

So now is the time to make your five piece list for Spring Summer. Think about your budget and stick to it and by writing the items down you can always refer back it to throughout the season - it will ensure you don't impulse buy without consulting your list first.

If you need some inspiration, here is my Spring Summer five piece list (some of which I have already brought).

MY SPRING SHOPPING LIST

  1. NEW WHITE TRAINERS - The trend is to ditch the trainers this season and when the weather hots up I will be getting my toes out in sandals but for now and again into Autumn a pair of box fresh white trainers is a must-have to make my outfits look fresh. Adidas Stan Smith’s are a fail safe option for me and for my clients, but this season I am going to invest in a pair of VEJA trainers. Now just to choose which pair.

2. PINK BOILERSUIT - the jumpsuit and now the boilersuit is my go-to item in my wardrobe. I love the denim jumpsuit that I brought from Topshop in December, as this is black I would like a lighter one for Spring Summer.

3. MINI CROSS BODY BAG - the trend for bags is going mini and micro, some are totally impractical but I do like the idea of not carrying alot in my everyday cross body bag, especially for the evening. So I have my eye on a couple of coloured bags that will be an investment item for me.

4. UPDATED BLAZER - I have worn and worn my check blazer from Mango that I brought last year so I feel that I need a new one because it’s abit worn and I like wearing blazers to consultations with clients and also over dresses in the summer. I want another check as I like having the pattern, but not sure what kind yet so I am keeping my shopping eye out for the one I want and that I know will last my through Autumn too.

5. THE PERFECT MIDI DRESS - The midi dress has been on trend for a number of seasons now and the retailers offerings are going from strength to strength. I found my perfect evening one last season, the animal print from Whistles dress, so now I am on the hunt for a summer day version of this.
