Spring denim 2023

2023 is the year of denim. For whatever reason it is everywhere and worn in every possible way including double denim.

If you buy one thing for spring, make it something denim. Denim is timeless. But its silhouettes aren’t exactly immune to fashion’s trend cycle either. Season after season, there’s continuous excitement and curiosity surrounding what specific looks will enter and exit the chat. Are low-rise jeans back? Are skinny jeans dead? Well, consider these and the rest of your burning sartorial questions for 2023’s spring denim trends answered.

It's easy to style with any wardrobe essential and even easier to fashion into any form, with dresses, skirts, shirts and more made from the failsafe fabric. The styles go much further than our favourite pair of straight-leg jeans. Consumers are seeing denim as more than the everyday basic than it once was. People are, of course, still in the market for that one great fitting pair of everyday jeans, but they’re also looking for something unique and special that they can mix into their everyday rotation.

So whilst low slung jeans are back in style it doesn’t mean we have to wear them. It’s about choosing some great denim pieces and using them back with everything else in your wardrobe for a wearable but upto date look.

Here are the spring/summer 2023 denim pieces that are bound to reap compliments.

The return of the humble shirt

ALL HAIL THE SHIRT

For a few seasons the shirt seems to have gone into the back of the wardrobe in favour of the classic t-shirt, sweater or blouse. But this season it returns with maximum femininity and creativity.

It’s not about having a boring white shirt in your wardrobe for such an occasion that arises for you to wear one, white shirts are making a comeback but they look nothing like the one you have gathering dust. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t be making an investment purchase with your shirt that will have a legacy in your wardrobe, but what’s out there right now is anything but boring. Full of embroidery, frill details, puff sleeves and femininity it’s all in the details.

Top of the list is a white shirt which can be worn layered underneath your knit, cable cardi or oversized blazer in the coming weeks while the temperature rises. This particular styling has inspired the high street to copy a shirt from Ganni (featured below), a Scandinavian brand that has many fashion followers and leads where others follow.

The other week I featured overshirts as a big trend for Spring and the check being the main print and driving force of this. Check shirts and blouses are also around with puff sleeves or big sleeves and detailing, so kind of the opposite of the edgy biker like look to the overshirt - there is no reason why you can’t style both, I know I will be.

Down the catwalk many designers showed lots of blue stripe shirts and all the magazine and trend reports are pushing this as the shirt to buy this season. So there is alot of plain mensy oversized shirts out there which are to be worn with tapered trousers and oversized blazers.

Lastly denim shirts are definately making a come back, either edgy stiff denim acid washed or chambray soft cotton with frills. Either way a denim shirt is a wardrobe hero and such a great piece to be worn with skirts and dresses.

Inject some Spring into your wardrobe with a new jacket

OH YES I do love a jacket. And a coat. And a shacket. Oh and now an overshirt. Which is kind of a jacket if you layer it up over things or under your coat. Confused yet?

An overshirt has been something I have been getting men to wear for the past couple of seasons, but this lightweight jacket trend seems to of moved over to women’s high street retailers and is perfect for your first Spring purchase. Nearing to the end of January, the longest month ever, means a little payday reward and a new January Jacket will set you up for the coming weeks and months through Spring.

Here are my top 5 Spring jackets to shop for now -

Check jacket

Nice big bright checks, overshirt trucker style jacket with a collar or without will work over everything you currently have in your wardrobe and give it a fresh update.

Overshirt jackets

This is the trend I keep seeing everywhere right now, it’s just about finding the right one in the right colour. Essentially the same as the checks but in plain colours and oversized.

Quilted linear jackets

These are starting to have their moment where the puffa has been so big this Autumn the paired down, slightly more interesting version is out there. Take your pick of great shapes and colours for a new spin on a puffa.

Rain Mac

Come on we all need one of these in our life to save us from the crazy UK weather, isn’t it about time we invest properly in something that we also feel stylish in.

Boxy Jacket

This is the same trend as the overshirt but instead of being oversized it’s more of a fitted silhouette but still is the same shape.

how to wear the dress over trouser trend

Shirt dresses are cool again!

As many of you know I am a massive fan of the shirt being a wardrobe hero and have written a number of blog posts on how to wear the shirt and how to move it on from season to season. As shirting continues to reign in fashion, inevitably it evolves into new areas to update this look. So it's no wonder that the iconic shirt dress is having a moment. Long or midi, or shorter in length, it's a simple work wear solution that looks sophisticated, stylish and oozes femininity.

Rock the dress over your trousers

But lately the style set has put a fresh spin on the frock, employing it as a jacket worn partially buttoned over jeans and t-shirts or layered over slip dresses. It's this summer's answer to layering. The layered look has been a popular trend in recent years, and this season, trendsetters are taking it a bold step further with the dress over trousers. If you are thinking of wearing a dress over trousers and wondering whether it even makes sense. Yes it does, and you’ll love it. This ‘90s inspired trend is a cool new way to update items you already own by pairing them in a unique way that might not initially come to mind.

How to wear this trend

If you’re in doubt how to pull off this tricky, yet cool trend, here are a few easy tips to follow, whether you want to go for a safe look or bolder style

1. Going long - you can go long or short when wearing dresses over trousers; but when going long make sure there is a revealing slit or buttons are slightly undone to reveal a pop of leg underneath to break it up.

2. Going short - When wearing shorter dresses, cropped trousers work better whether it be a pair of smart black trousers or denim jeans.

3. Wear with denim - team your favourite jeans with a pretty dress and it will instantly look more relaxed and effortless.

4. Play with proportions - for an edgy style play with the volume on your legs and wear a more fitted dress to balance them out.

5. Opt for heels - Unless you are very tall, the reinterpretation of the dress over pants trend looks best when worn with a mid to high heel as it will help you feel less frumpy.

6. Go bold & bright - go for bright colours or do a bit of splash of colours on your outfit. Pick one bright coloured staple among the neutrals to make it pop even more.
