Best Autumn pieces on the high street right now

top.JPG

These past few years since I have been working as a personal stylist I have tended to shop smart rather than buy throw away fashion like I did in my younger years when working in fashion buying. It is a mantra that I talk about when speaking to new clients, re-connecting with old ones and one of my tips I try and impart to them. I know if you shop smart and, for the most part, buy the very best quality you can afford, you’ll hit repeat on those pieces for years (and years and years). That’s certainly how I dress. I wear a handful of the same things over and over, updating when I need to.

In this blog I wanted to bring the pieces to you that I have been seeing alot of whilst shopping over these past few weeks that will ensure your wardrobe has staying power. The trick is knowing what you’re looking for: timeless silhouettes, high-quality fabric and flattering cuts. When these three come together, you’ve found a keeper. I like focusing on pieces that have longevity in your wardrobe and mixing them in with the very best seasonal staples and instant transformers.

So here is my top stylish Autumn pieces on the high street right now that you’ll love wearing this winter – then next winter and the one after that too.

1. The smart coat

I love the fabric of this Herringbone tweed coat from Jigsaw. It’s such a great fit and a great silhouette that it flatters your figure even if you are wearing a chunky knit underneath it.

2. The perfect parka

I am always on the look out for the perfect parka for clients that are casual in style but not too sporty or not too ‘Mumsy’ looking! This Whistles parka is the perfect khaki colour, the fake fur goes really well and the fully borg lining will keep you warm.

3. Jeans

As many of my clients know I am massive advocate for Levi jeans, they are my go to and have been a winner for all clients I have worked with for 5 years. But I have started to explore some other brands, and the American brands are the better ones for fabric, cut and fit. I especially like at the moment these Madewell high waisted jeans from John Lewis.

4. Trousers

For months now trousers are top of the list when it comes to shopping for myself and for clients. Everyone is steering away from everyday jeans and wanting to wear smarter, more comfortable trousers with trainers. I have found the best pairs to be from Me & Em, whether its smart joggers, wide leg trousers or some everyday trousers you can’t go wrong with the fit and quality of this brand.

5. The cable knit

I love it when it gets really cold and you need to wear your chunkiest piece of knitwear to stay warm. But you shouldn’t have to compromise on style when in knitwear and choosing something with a cable running through it ensures it looks more stylish and gives your knitwear personality. &other stories have a great selection of cable knits right now, my favourite has to be this polo neck one.

6. The cashmere jumper

More and more we are looking for quality over quanity when we are buying items, yes we might need to spend slightly more money on something with better quality but it will last us longer. I am currently loving Boden’s cashmere jumper offering, this stripe one has got some great colours in it for brightening up your wardrobe.

7. The maxi dress

The maxi and midi dress were a favourite of mine this Summer and I have continued to wear some so far this Autumn, layered with blazers, my leather jacket and tights. But I have found the perfect dress from Baukjen which is currently on my wishlist!

8. The knitted dress

This piece is always very hard to find every season, so comfortable but can end up being very unflattering if not the right shape and style for your figure so tread carefully. I think this grey midi dress from Kin at John Lewis will never go out of style, but ensure you size right.

9. Boots

I featured these boots on my Autumn ‘lust-after’ blog post back in September and they are still my favourite boots I have seen out there at the moment. I love the casual but formal feel of them, biker boots but can be worn dressed up too. These Kurt Geiger boots come in 3 colourways too.

10. The ultimate bag

You can never have too many bags in your life, as we navigate our daily lives we need large shoppers, cross body bags for hands free life, bags big enough for laptops, evening clutches…the list goes on. BUT there is an ultimate large shopper out there in Leopard print from Day Birger et Mikkelsen that is irresistible and needs to be added to your wardrobe pronto!

what is it with shoes?

I can find any excuse to buy a new pair of shoes and the change of weather is just the one I need right now! What is it with shoes and the power they have over you, just willing you to buy them? Fundamentally we all need to shoes to walk in daily so they are a great investment (excuse number 2 natch!), but we don't ALWAYS need them! But by putting your best foot forward sometimes what you have dressed your feet in can end up making your outfit and cementing your daily style.

For the past few seasons the most popular catwalk Spring shoe trends have centred around a few major styles; block heeled mules, backless sliders and fashion sneakers. These styles are so strong that they have now made it to the high street and you can have your pick of the most fashionable shoes out there if you know where to look. There is also one shoe trend to ignore, whilst the fashion world is championing the return of the crocs, please do not think that your feet will look anything but awful in these plastic shoes!

So whether you are looking for a new pair of flats now that the socks are off, or transitional styles that will see you through the Summer. Make sure you check out my top styles to wear now to be sure your feet are the best dressed around. Just don't forget the plasters in your bag!

Best shoe styles for Spring / Summer 2017

1. The Mule

Mules should be your footwear of choice this spring. No longer seen as a boring shoe, the new mule is versatile – it's a statement as your go-to heel, yet as comfy as your trusty trainer. Any height, open- or closed-toe, but always backless, the mule will rule your wardrobe this season. I will be wearing my Topshop pair that I brought last year with a bow on the front, make sure yours make a statement.

2. The sling back block Heel

Sling backs were hot on the catwalks and when Dior added a bow to the back of their's it became an over night sensation. I love the femininity of the addition of the bow and these can easily be worn in the daytime through to evening.

3. The Backless Flat

When Gucci did the backless loafers last spring becoming the most Instagramed pair of shoes of the year, slip on's suddenly felt like a good idea. Popular again this year, I like them for the fact that they cover your toes and you just have to pop your feet in and go! Easy dressing!

4. The Trainer update

The humble sneaker still adorns my feet most days and I can't get enough of the comfy feel of them but making a style statement too. This season they have had an upgrade with the addition of embroidery and beading work giving them a more feminine edge. Jump into Spring with the new styles.

5. V-cut toes shoe

Forget round, square and almond – the V-toe is the new shoe shape to know about. Cut low on your foot, they give a flattering, elongated effect which works especially well with all those wide leg trousers around at the moment. Just be wary of dodgy tan lines.

put a spring in your step

The 5 pairs of shoes you will need this Summer.

Finally the clocks have gone forwards and so now's the time to discuss spring shoes. What can we wear on our feet to make us feel “new season”. So shoe lovers rejoice, this season it's all about what you are walking in so step up your shoe game and book that pedicure now!

1. The Ballerina

Let your inner Ballerina shine through with the biggest move on for the flat shoe we have had in years. It's the soft, tie up, true ballerina shoe. These from Mui Mui are what little girls dreams are made of...

Check out Kurt Geiger for a more affordable pair in white, pale pink or tan - £89.00 Kitty flat ballerina

2. The espadrille

So easy to slip on, so versatile and in so many prints and colours, what's not to like about them? I love my Boden espadrilles - £69.50

3. The no-back loafer

At its simplest it’s like a prayer shoe, but this season anything backless goes: loafer, block heel, espadrille. Last year's biggest shoe for the fashionista's from Gucci, this one from Topshop KOLA loafer £59.00 is a little bit more in my price range!

4. The pimped-up trainer

Trainers or sneakers are thankfully here to stay as a trend item. But who says they have to be plain, white and boring like Victoria Beckham. Many designers have pimped their's up with metallic's, embroidery, colours and jewels. River Island high top trainer - £95.00

5. Block heel's

Chunky block heels ruled the runway, which are not only on-trend but also comfortable. Our feet will be very happy! Whistles VOE high sandal - £185.00

6. For that style statement shoe, go with Pom Pom's

Zara Pom Pom sandles £ 49.99
