No Dresses Allowed- What else to wear at a wedding

Deciding what to wear to a wedding isn't easy at the best of times, but if you don't want to wear a dress then it can be a minefield of shopping nightmares!

Not everyone fancies looking like Victoria Beckham in a chic dress and heels, for some the idea of showing their knee's, leg's, or ankle's makes them want to RSVP NO!

While tomboy chic has long permeated our catwalks and shops, weddings are still regarded a widely formal affair where dresses are seen as the female uniform of choice. Weddings require a way of dressing that would be totally unnatural in any other setting. In fact, the clothes wedding guests wear would today only really be suited to Ascot.

Dressing up doesn't have to mean just dresses. There is an odd but common misconception that trousers are more informal than dresses, which is obviously ridiculous for anyone who has seen Katharine Hepburn in one of her high-waisted trouser suits and shirt combos. It also doesn't make you less feminine; Audery Hepburn, the girliest of all women, loved a pair of trews and if she was around today she'd have rocked a pair of chinos and silk pink shirt to her girlfriend's nuptials. Or there's the Amal Clooney- remember that incredible white trouser suit she wore when she married George Clooney? Admittedly you have to be pretty lean to wear such a look, but she looked chic and elegant.

There is, of course, nothing wrong with wearing a dress. But just don't feel it's your only option. And remember if you're feeling lost when looking at the murky wedding guest dress code, think what would Alexa Chung do?

Here is my guide to alternative wedding dressing:

1. Playsuits - Playsuits are another good option; think of Seventies Halston and Studio 54. They look great in both jewel tones and also in classic colours like navy and black. It also has the same beauty of a dress in that you only need to think of one item, unlike with separates. Chunky heels are about the only item you need to go with.

2. Trouser suit - Channelling Amal Clooney, wear with wedges as they give you height without having to worry about stepping onto the bottoms of the wide leg trouser. Adding some great accessories will ensure that you look dressed right for the occasion.

3. Slim trousers & shirt combo- For a wedding you can wear black and white without worrying about clashing with the bride. Or change it up by wearing a sequin top instead of a white shirt and always make sure you wer those killer heals to finish off the look.

4. Skirts - There's something about a skirt that doesn't feel as formal as a dress. Team a high-waisted skirt with a sequinned vest or a lace shirt tucked into a pencil skirt. Then throw an oversized mannish blazer over the top for good measure.

Edits dress code- Summer Christening

I'm currently in the middle of organising my little one's Christening in the summer. I also have the honour of being Godmother to my lovely friend's daughter Niamh in May. So with two very important Christening's coming up in the next few months, it got me thinking; what do you wear to a Christening?

It's not a formal event as a wedding would be, but it's not a casual party as there's a Church involved. So what is the perfect dress code for a summer Christening? Here are my thoughts:

  • A lightweight day dress is almost certainly going to be appropriate
  • Choose a luxe fabric like silk, lace panelling and brocade but stay away from chiffon which may look too eveningy
  • A floral print, dot or small motif always looks appropriate and romantic
  • Don't overdo it with accessories
  • Think about skirt length and arm coverage when going to a religious ceremony
  • Stay away from white (too bridal) and black (too evening) think colour instead
  • Have a coloured blazer, printed jacket or wrap on hand for the ceremony or if it gets cold at the reception

Here are my top 5 Christening dresses-

1. Finery London, Printed lace shirt dress, £69

2. Whistles, Bloomsbury print bodycon dress, £150.00

3. Diane Von Furstenberg, Meghan dress, Selfridges, £345.00

4. French Connection, Freida Flower warp dress, £130.00

5. Iris & Ink, Fi crepe dress, theoutnet.com, £155.00

5 simple style rules

One of the most frequent questions I get asked from clients, friends and relatives is "How can I look stylish everyday?". There is a theory that no matter what you do in life, you are always communicating something. Body language experts have built entire careers on this theory—as have stylists. They believe that your outfit is not simply a thing with a certain aesthetic appeal; it’s a form of self-expression. Your clothing says something to those around you, whether you intend for it to or not, so it’s best to approach dressing with some form of intention.

If you are an avid fashionista or you like dipping your toe into current trends, or want to update your image and don't know where to start...there are alot of overwhelming styling tips out there and it can be hard to know the right things to do for everyday dressing.

The good news is that my 5 top style rules make it alot simplier.

1. Tiny Tricks

Seemingly tiny tricks can totally change your look. Something as simple as tucking your shirt in, rolling up your chinos or putting a belt round your dress can have a huge impact on your style.

2. A great pair

Investing in a great pair of jeans will pay you back 10 fold. Whilst cheap on trend styles are fine to grab, a wardrobe staple jean is definately worth investing in and will stay with you year after year.

3. Your signature

One MUST have a style signature. Whether it’s a gold bangle you always wear or the fact that you always choose boyfriend jeans over skinnies, figure out what one thing defines your own personal style, and stick with it—until you want to change it, and then feel free to do so.

4. Fit

Is the most important thing. You could have on the trendiest, most expensive outfit in the world—but if it doesn’t fit you properly, you’re not going to look stylish, and all your effort and money would have been wasted.

5. Playing with trends

There are right places and wrong places to try out trends. If you’re attending a relative’s wedding, it might not be the best time to bust out those Birkenstocks. But on a night out with your friends, it could be the perfect time to wear that suede fringe mini skirt.

and finally...

There are many things a personal stylist can do for you to either update your image or style and if you don't know where to start I can send in the right direction. Over come those fears that you may be thinking about because I am here to help and will do in a friendly, approachble and easy manner.

  • It might be that you don't have the money to go shopping. I can use your existing collection of clothes to mix and match and create new outfits in a way tha you probably wouldn't think to do so.
  • You might want to update your image but don't really know what style you want. Once I've got to know abit more about your personality and lifestyle, I will start to get a sense of the person you are and get an idea of what style will work for you. I can help you build up an idea of what you like and we can use that to influence your image overhaul.
  • You might be a full time Mum and feel like you've lost a sense of who you are and would like to get back to the old you! As a mum myself I can relate to this as I know what it feels like to have no time or energy for yourself. Our lives may have changed, but we are still the same person and confidence is the best accessory. After a session with me you will be a more updated and modern version of yourself with a new sense of style.
  • It might be that the thought of someone going through your wardorbe terrifies you! Don't worry, you don't need to feel embarrassed. I have seen wardrobes of all shapes, sizes and conditions and I am rarely surprised by what I find. I will never judge you based on how many and what clothes you own.

Edits guide to your top 5 Spring buys

It might surprise you to know I really haven’t bought many clothes in the last 18 months. I didn’t bother much whilst I was expecting and since having my 3rd baby it's taken a few months and a season change to get back into the swing of 'making an effort'.

So a few weeks ago I decided to do a wardrobe detox on my own wardrobe. I took into consideration all of the advice I give my clients and tried most things on to decipher if they were worth keeping.

After I had removed all the pieces that I realised I would never wear again, didn't fit my lifestyle anymore and had no sentimental value, I wrote myself a 'wish list' of new spring pieces to add into my newly streamlined wardrobe.

Whilst compiling my 'wish list' I also considered the realisation that what I purchase needs to be more practical than before, and that more than ever, I am looking for a flattering fit and good quality. “Quite nice” just won’t cut it anymore. Plus I just don’t have the time or the inclination to spend a small fortune on alterations. So what I purchase has to be right for me, here and now and will last with 3 boys around. But perhaps with a few sparkly things thrown in too...

These are the things on my 'wish list', why don't you share yours with me too?

Top 5 Spring Buys

1. Culottes, Vero Moda, Atterley Road, £28.00

2.  White Shirt, Zara, £39.99

3. Denim dress, asos, £40.00

4. Statement 70s jacket, River Island, £60.00

5. denim dungerees, Paige Denim, Selfridges, £315.00
